Let’s Get Crafty…DIY Ideas for Estate Sale Finds!

IMG_7401

Nobody loves estate sales more than us, and we come across SO many great treasures! But…sometimes you need a little inspiration to know what to DO with all the great stuff you run across, right? Well, we’ve put together a few ideas to help get you in the mood to hit the sales…you never know what you’re going to find! We’ve got two great sales this week and many more to come all summer…

IMG_7397

Add a set of wheels to a stack of old crates (Home Depot has wheels like the ones pictured), stack those crates high and you’ve got a rustic storage area to corral clutter in an entryway. The soda bottle box on top holds sunglasses, mittens and scarves. So unique and different, right? Plus a great re-use of old items.

IMG_7392Decorate a set of basement stairs with old license plates! We come across these in basements and garages all the time! A fun collection that you can display and add to over time, right?

IMG_7390

So easy! Stack old suitcases to make a great bedside table…and they are excellent storage for things like linens and out-of-season clothing items. Add a tray or mirror on top for a finished look.

IMG_7395

We love this one! An old treadle sewing machine cabinet has been transformed into a vanity table with storage for make-up and jewelry. A great way to update and re-purpose this stylish antique piece.

IMG_7394

Create a pet bed out of an old dresser drawer! A new set of legs are added, plus a cushion…much fancier than your typical foam pet bed.

IMG_7393

Here’s one for us here in Tennessee, right? Almost any bottle can be transformed into a soap dispenser with a simple pump kit; they are easy to find at Michael’s craft stores or on Amazon.

IMG_7396

We see so many gorgeous vintage linens in our sales. Here’s a great idea that anyone with basic sewing skills can accomplish…what a fun way to re-use that pretty embroidery!

IMG_7386

Create a drinks station with a simple wooden shelf and a galvanized bucket! We often come across small occasional pieces like this…just cut out the top with a jigsaw and drop in your bucket. Perfect for 4th of July parties.

IMG_7389

Up-cycle that old picture frame…paint it, staple strips of lace to the back and hang an earring collection. Wouldn’t that be a great gift item?

IMG_7388

Here an old grater holds a beautiful bouquet of dried flowers…an easy and unexpected idea that would look great in a kitchen or on a patio.

Ready to hit the sales? We’re going to keep ’em coming all summer and we definitely have some fabulous ones coming up this season. Our retail store, Michael Taylor At Home, is open this week with TONS of great items ready to use as/is or to re-purpose in creative and new ways!

See you soon!

Michael Taylor and Co.

Time to make a move? Let us help!

mooving

It’s springtime in Nashville, and that means that the real estate market is heating up. We’re seeing new “for sale” signs go up all over town, aren’t you?  With approximately 80 people moving to our city each day, this has made for a busy real estate market. Lots of folks are looking to buy…and lots of other folks are looking to cash out some equity and take this opportunity to make a change.

Moving is always stressful and difficult, but at the Michael Taylor Company, we’ve been helping clients liquidate unneeded belongings in preparation for moves for a long time, and we know how to help!

Wondering if a moving sale is right for you? Here’s how a sale can benefit you:

  1. Moving is not cheap. In most cases, it’s best to liquidate items that aren’t necessary rather than pay to pack and move them. Having a sale ahead of a move ensures that you’re just paying to move items that you really want and need. We’ve had some customers pay for their whole move with the proceeds of their sale…it’s a pretty smart way to off-set those moving costs!
  2. Clean out those storage areas. Who among us hasn’t put an item in a basement or garage, thinking that we will get rid of it “someday”, but never seem to get around to it? Clutter happens to the best of us. Sometimes, that clutter gets to be too much for busy people to handle by themselves…this is where our team can help!
  3. Change is inevitable. Hobbies change, children go off to college, lifestyles change…we need different “stuff” for different times in our lives, and sometimes the old stuff needs to find a new home. We have a huge network of estate sale customers who love to shop our sales, and we advertise to this audience weekly. Also, we have a proven track record of successful sales in Nashville…you don’t need to worry about “finding someone who can use such-and-such thing”–we do that for you!
  4. Value matters. You may know that your unnecessary items are worth “something”, but what? Over and over, we hear the phrase, “Well, I paid a lot for it and I don’t want to just give it away.”  We hear you on that! Our goal is to get the maximum value for your items. We have a great team of folks who are trained to spot and correctly value antiques, vintage and collectible items…and they know the trends in the market! Our job is to liquidate your items in the agreed-upon time frame at the best possible price, and we’ve been in business for over 8 years accomplishing just that for our customers.

So, if you (or a friend or neighbor!) find yourself considering a move this spring or summer…please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 615-545-2867. We’re happy to discuss your needs and see if our services are the right fit for the items you need to liquidate. Unlike other companies locally, our 9,000 sq foot warehouse gives us a range of options for sales, including having sales off-site at our warehouse if an on-property sale isn’t possible.

This week, we’ve got two great sales–one in Murfreesboro and one in Thompson’s Station. We’re also open Tuesday-Saturday from 10-5pm at Michael Taylor at Home at 478 Allied Drive, 37211…lots of great new stuff this week, please drop by and see! And, please don’t forget…it’s our spring hiring season. If you or someone you know needs a GREAT job with a wonderful team, we’re offering positions for sale setters, salespeople and cashiers. Must be able to work 3 days/week, lift 25 lbs, pass background check and work well with others. $11/hour to start, reliable transportation a must. Winter Estate Sale Shopping Tips

IMG_5931

While some estate sale companies slow down or take a break during the winter, at the Michael Taylor Company, we are proud to offer year-round shopping opportunities, both at Michael Taylor At Home and at on-site sales.  This season of occasionally snowy roads and freezing temperatures can bring with it a few challenges, so we wanted to share a few tips to help you make the most of your time at the sales.

  1. Dress warmly! This might be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many folks underestimate how cold it is, standing in a line outside to wait for an estate sale to open.  Arriving early to get the best deals is a good strategy, but be sure to bundle up! Some folks also take a bag or basket and use it to mark their place in line while they retreat to the warmth of their cars to wait…pretty smart, we say. Also, inexpensive hand-warmers from stores like Wal-Mart can help fingers and toes stay warm while you wait in line.
  2. Coffee. We always have coffee at our sales, but make sure to bring a travel mug or thermos so you can fuel up while you wait for the sale to open. IMG_5933
  3. Wear flat, closed-toed shoes. Again, this one seems like a no-brainer, but we can’t count the folks who wear flip flops or high heels to our sales. We do our best to carefully mark uneven patio steps or steep/slippery basement stairs, but in older homes, sometimes the footing can be challenging. We strongly encourage you to wear shoes that will help you stay steady on your feet, especially in the winter when ice and snow can be found on entrances and pathways.
  4. Park smart! Parking is always a challenge at estate sales. Residential neighborhoods aren’t always suited for a crowd of cars. We do the best we can to manage traffic, but the best strategy is to be a good neighbor wherever you are and to err on the side of caution. Be especially careful when parking in yards; winter weather often makes the ground soft and muddy, and it’s easy to get stuck.
  5. Follow us on Facebook.  We post snow day sale updates, info about discounts and time changes on our Michael Taylor Estate and Moving Sales Facebook page…be our “friend” at: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelTaylorEstateandMovingSales/

Come rain or shine, snow or ice…you just can’t stop us from holding great estate and moving sales! With a little extra planning/care, you can get some fantastic deals, so plan on coming out and seeing us soon. We’ve got two great sales in Nashville this week, lots of discounts and deals at Michael Taylor At Home and more awesome sales coming up this month!

Small Business Saturday

IMG_5476

This Saturday, Nov. 26th is designated as a special day to honor and shop local businesses in your community. We wanted to take a quick minute to share what we love about being a small business, and thank you, our customers and clients, for keeping us going!

The Michael Taylor company has been on the forefront of the estate and moving sale scene in Nashville since 2008, when Michael started the company with a handful of workers. Since then, Michael Taylor Estate and Moving sales has grown to become the area’s leading estate and moving sale company, with a 9,000 sq ft warehouse/retail space. We’ve conducted sales in tiny East Nashville cottages and huge Brentwood mansions, and everywhere in between.

IMG_5480

The company has created 15-20 (varying seasonally) jobs, both full and part-time, for local Nashville folks. While in recent years, we’ve seen national chains come in to town and establish franchised estate sale companies, we’ve been here all along–creating jobs, serving the estate sale needs of our neighbors and friends, making friends with our dear and loyal customers.

IMG_5478

You hear a lot about “green” businesses these days–businesses that are committed to keeping their environmental footprint small, or have a strong commitment to recycling. Without actually aspiring to trendy labels, the Michael Taylor Company is as “green” as they come. Through our estate sales, we re-introduce tons of diverse household items into our local community and marketplace. When you buy a pieces of antique furniture from our retail store rather than picking up a piece of new, imported furniture from a big box retailer, you are recycling this item by giving it new usefulness in your home. It may seem different to think of what we are doing as part of the “reduce, re-use, recycle” movement but we are making environmental impact on a local level–and you are, too, when you shop with us!

IMG_5477

Many small businesses (also local!) source their goods from us, creating a livelihood for countless local people in the vintage resale industry. Resellers shop our sales to stock antique stores, estate jewelry stores, flea market booths, Ebay stores, craft shows and more.

IMG_5479

This Nov. 26th, we hope you will consider shopping with us…we’ve got a great estate sale (see link to listing on our homepage) and Michael Taylor At Home will be offering 50% off of all glassware and 50% off jewelry. In addition to Saturday, we’re also open Weds., 10-5, Fri., 10-5 and Sun., 1-5.

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Small Business Saturday and THANK YOU for being our wonderful customers and clients. We think the world of you and love to see your smiling faces!

Michael Taylor and Co.

De-Light-ful Deals: Lighting fixtures are the best value in estate sale shopping

It’s no secret that you can save money by shopping estate sales. Just like cars, most brand-new housewares, furniture and home accessories drop in value once they leave the retail store. At our sales, we sell pre-owned merchandise and thus are able to pass this cost savings along to our customers. But, there are some things that retain their value better than others, and we’re happy to shed some light on that subject! (Pun intended!)

IMG_4023

This dramatic crystal chandelier from a recent Brentwood-area sale is a great example. Fixtures of this size, type and quality retail for tens of thousands of dollars at popular lighting retailers.  It’s easy to understand why; the sparkle and drama of a huge crystal chandelier makes a beautiful and timeless statement that instantly upgrades the look of any home.

At our sale, this fixture listed for much less than the retail price, but here’s where the value comes in–it was in the exact same condition as the day it was purchased. Classic ceiling lighting fixtures typically don’t incur much, if any, wear and tear. And lighting fixtures defy trends; this fixture wouldn’t have looked out-of-place 50 years ago, nor is it likely to look dated 50 years from now. Now that’s a deal!

While the condition of some items (for example, fabric-covered furniture) deteriorates with time and use, this isn’t typically true of lighting. An exception would be cords or shades on table lamps. However, replacing wiring or cords on vintage or antique fixtures is a simple matter; cord “kits” are available at Home Depot and a new cord can replace a frayed one in a matter of minutes.  And replacing a shade is easy; we tend to have a lot of them at our sales or big box retailers like Target carry them at low prices.

With the availability and abundance of both ceiling and table lighting fixtures at our sales, we can say with confidence that there’s no reason to ever buy a new lighting fixture.

app_images%2Fresizable%2F2e882a1e-f6a0-4782-91e3-8e688ee0ea83%2FXHZD4013

Here are a few great examples available at Michael Taylor At Home, where we showcase a tremendous variety of table and ceiling fixtures, from contemporary to antique. If you are looking to upgrade the look of your home AND get the most value for your dollar, we cannot recommend starting with lighting strongly enough!

Come see us this week at our 4 great sales in Madison, Old Hickory, Franklin and Thompson’s Station…or at Michael Taylor At Home. We’re happy to help you find a great new light fixture (at a great price!).

Here’s Your Sign! Funny signs you definitely won’t see at our sales…

At Michael Taylor Estate and Moving Sales, we pride ourselves in our best-in-business practices, including our printed signage.

Keeping it classy!

As a professional operation, we hold ourselves to the highest standards but we aren’t above having a laugh with (not at, we respect everyone!) the do-it-yourself-ers who take a lighter approach. Hey, we know better than anyone that putting on a sale is a hard job, and we see the funny side, too. Here are a few signs that we definitely won’t be using, but made us laugh anyway:

It’ll be huuuuuge! Well, we can’t get political, but it looks like they’ve got some hair-raising deals at this sale…

Hey, it’s Lionel Ritchie…he actually lived here in Nashville when he was recording his country album and we know he’s a fan of local culture, so maybe he’d appreciate a sign like this? Funny stuff, but I think we’ll stick to our standard signs.

Blog post 3

Simpsons fans will appreciate this one. We’ve all had that “take all my money” moment when we see something great at a sale!

Sometimes the truth is…too much?

Summer Tips for Successful Estate Sale Shopping

Ah, the great outdoors! Are you wearing your bug spray and sunscreen?
Ah, an estate sale in the great outdoors! Are you wearing your bug spray and sunscreen?

Is it hot enough for you? Summer is here for sure in Tennessee, and that’s great news for estate sale fans. This time of year boasts the largest number of estate sales, barn sales, tent sales…you name it! There’s lots of shopping fun to be had, but it’s also a time of year when you need to plan ahead and take a few precautions so that you don’t run into trouble when you’re on the hunt for discounted treasures.

app_images%2Fresizable%2F497799ed-0f1b-4bba-ad03-cee21bbca729%2Fblog10

Warmer temps mean that sales are held outdoors as well as inside. When you’re picking through items that have been stored in barns or sheds, you might want to bring along a pair of gloves to protect your hands from dirt, rust, splinters…and the occasional spider. A little good planning helps make the experience safer and more fun.

Park smart and avoid trouble! It's worth the effort.
Park smart and avoid trouble! It’s worth the effort.

Estate sale parking can be challenging, especially with larger summertime crowds. Neighborhoods are rarely designed for the influx of vehicles that a sale can attract, and often times people are in a rush to park and get inside to shop. However, it’s important to remember that there’s not ANY deal that’s worth a scraped bumper. Take special care in older neighborhoods with narrow streets (Inglewood) or inside condominium complexes not to park on both sides of the street–there must always be a clear path for emergency vehicles. Summer often brings heavy rains; if an area looks muddy, be extra careful about parking your vehicle!

Yeah, that's how you roll your ankle on the uneven terrain or rickety basement stairs at an estate sale. Wear closed-toed shoes!
Yeah, that’s how you roll an ankle on the uneven lawn or rickety basement stairs at an estate sale.

Can we talk about flip flops? We love our flip flops in the summertime…but they are a hazard at estate sales. Often, older houses have uneven flooring, or steep/slippery/narrow basement and attic stairs. Navigating narrow hallways in a crowd of estate sale shoppers while wearing flip-flops can be dangerous to your toes! Please consider saving the flip flops for the beach, and wear your closed-toed shoes to the sales.

Hydrate, hydrate! We'll have the lemonade waiting for you at our summer sales.
Hydrate, hydrate! We’ll have the lemonade waiting for you at our summer sales.

Summer estate sales are often hot…especially outdoor barn and tent sales! Be sure to stay hydrated in warm weather. We offer complimentary lemonade, coffee and ice water at all of our sales, so please be sure to take advantage of this.

Keep bugs and sunburn at bay!
Keep bugs and sunburn at bay!

If you’re out at estate sales, it’s good to keep a bottle of sunscreen and bug spray handy. With the warmer weather, often times we will have items for sale outdoors; and y’all know that mosquitos are out in force this time of year. A little spray will help keep ’em away!

Join the fun and line up early!
Join the fun and line up early!

If you really want to beat the heat, arrive early. Our sales open at 8:00 a.m., and folks generally start lining up on the first day at about 7:00 a.m. It’s generally as cool outside as it’s going to be at that time, and there are lots of friendly people to chat with in line.  We really do have the best customers and we love seeing them each week!

Check our estate sale listings (link on our home page) for where we’ll be, and come join us for great deals and a glass of lemonade. See you there!

Behind the Scenes: Setting the Sale!

Believe it or not, this closet will be clean, organized and ready to shop in a few short days!
Where’s Waldo?? Believe it or not, this closet will be clean, organized and ready to shop in a few short days!

It’s no secret that we host some of Nashville’s largest estate and moving sales. While many local firms also handle single family homes, our area of specialization–and we really shine here!–is in liquidating the contents of larger properties. We have the experience, staff volume and knowledge to set even the largest of sales in 3-4 days. One of the most frequently asked questions we get from estate sale clients is, “Will you be ready to go on time?” because they can’t believe that we can clean, organize and set up large and complicated sales in such a short time frame. But, we get it done!

IMG_3756

Supplies are key, and we bring them to each sale. Cleaning supplies, trash bags, light bulbs, extra lighting, air fresheners…we bring it all in and get right to work!

Sometimes treasure, sometimes trash. We sort it out!
Sometimes treasure, sometimes trash. We sort it out!

Every sale has some items that need to be thrown out to ensure that the property is clean and the areas in the home are shopable. Some homes will have larger items in need of disposal; in these cases, we call in a dumpster to make clean-up easier.

IMG_3753

And then once the cleaning is done, we start setting the sale. All furniture, accessories, etc. are arranged and priced for easy shopping.

This guy! (Hey, we've got to have a little fun...)
This guy! (Hey, we’ve got to have a little fun…)

And once the sale is all set, we try out the bathtubs! Ha ha…no, we totally do NOT do that; our fearless leader, Michael Taylor, is just joking around in there.

Tool guy/gal alert!
Tool guy/gal alert!

This particular sale (located in Brentwood, TN, starting Friday, 7/1 and running through Monday 7/4) has something for everyone–from antiques to Craftsmen tools and cabinets.

Need glassware, crystal or barware? We've gotcha covered!
Need glassware, crystal or barware? We’ve gotcha covered!

We’ll have tons of glassware, crystal and bar accessories. The homeowner was a former antique dealer, as well, so we have some really great antiques.

IMG_3747

Lighting, candlesticks and crystal pieces are a special feature of this sale.

You are definitely going to need a ladder to reach the top shelf!
You are definitely going to need a ladder to reach the top shelf, Michael!

Not to mention, these 12-foot tall cabinets (set of 2). Michael is in the photo to provide scale; he’s well over 6 ft tall. These are huge cabinets!

IMG_3746

More china, glassware and lighting! This really is a huge sale. Antique dealers, take note!

IMG_3757

Plus, we’re selling a boat. Boats, cars, jet skis…if the seller has a clear title, we’re always happy to add it to the sale! These items usually move VERY fast, so be there early if you’re looking for a vehicle or watercraft.

Ready...set...go!
Ready…set…go!

Our last step before opening a sale is to get out our signage…after that, we’re open for business and ready to go!

Information and more photos about this Brentwood-area sale are available under the “Estate Sale Listings” tab on the home page of our website. It’s truly a don’t-miss sale and we look forward to seeing you there!

My best,

Michael Taylor and Company
